Surname Index To Manuscript Archives
This index is a work in progress. Volunteers are needed to
organize and label manuscript collections and to do further data entry for the manuscript
database.
Five collections are covered by this index:
- Bible Records. At the present time the index includes every surname mentioned
in the Bible records on file at GSP.
- Family. The Family collection file is indexed for every surname folder in this
file.
- Hocker. The Edward W. Hocker collection is indexed for every surname folder (this
collection is especially rich in Germantown families).
- Ely. The Warren Ely collection is indexed through surnames beginning with R (Ely
specialized in Bucks county families).
- Gerberich. The Gerberich collection is a study of Pennsylvania German surnames from their first appearance through several generations. It especially shows changes in the surname. It will help you to locate a surname in a Pennsylvania locality. Albert Gerberich was not doing genealogy, but his careful study of the surnames is invaluable in locating possibilities for your family research.
In the Bible Records the SEE and SEE ALSO surnames usually refer to spouses recorded
in the Bible marriage records. Thus Richards SEE Holmes means we have a Holmes family
Bible with someone surnamed Richards recorded in it. Jones SEE ALSO Wright means
we have a Jones Bible but the Jones surname can also be found in a Wright family
Bible.
Use your browser's Find command (under the Edit pulldown menu) to take you directly to successive occurrences of a surname. Look at all occurrences in the complete index, since the desired surname may appear even in the Comments column.
Please report typographical errors to GSP at GSPsurnames@aol.com.
NOTE: the following lookup service been suspended until August 1, as GSP moves to 1300 Locust St.
If you would like further information about any of these records, you may e-mail a request to GSPsurnames@aol.com. Please give the complete citation from the index (ID; Surname; Collection; See; See Also; Comment; Original). Please do not send attachments or pictures with your request unless specifically directed by us.
Our volunteers will do a lookup and try to answer your question. (The surname lookup is not available for microfilm records.) If you want a full transcription or photocopy of these records, this will be handled as a "Specific Request" under our GSP Inquiry Procedures.
