1. Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania: Resources, News & Announcements:

Scanning Photos, Illustrations, and Documents, presented by GSP Webmaster Don Stone and Tech SIG Program Chair Michael Freeland; Thursday, 8 Feb. 2007, 7 to 9 p.m., GSP Research Room. (Rescheduled from Nov.) Details.

The Ulster Historical Foundation will be in Philadelphia at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania for a one-day genealogical workshop, Saturday, 24 Feb. 2007. Details will appear on the GSP website when they become available.

Archivist of the United States Allen Weinstein and Footnote, Inc. CEO Russell Wilding have announced a partnership agreement to digitize selected records from the vast holdings of the National Archives. These documents have not been available online previously, and some had not been microfilmed by the National Archives. This is a subscription website but it offers free search capability. 4.5 million pages have been digitized so far:
• Papers of the Continental Congress (1774-1789)
• Mathew B. Brady Collection of Civil War Photographs
• Southern Claims Commission
• Name Index to Civil War and Later Pension Files
• Investigative Case Files of the Bureau of Investigation, 1908-1922.

Pennsylvania Archives now online at Footnote.com. A free service of Footnote.com is a fully searchable database and digitized images of the published Pennsylvania Archives. Comprised of Revolutionary War records, militia rolls, tax lists, church records, Minutes of the Provincial Council 1683-1775, Indian deeds, and much more, these records were published in a multi-volume series of well over 100 volumes.

New Retrospect Publishing CD: Allegheny Valley. Three books on one CD covering Allegheny, Westmoreland, Armstrong, Clarion, Venango, Forest, and Warren Counties. 1723 pp. ($) Search through thousands of genealogical sketches of Allegheny Valley residents from the 1700's to the early 1900's. The supervising editors of these three volumes were from Allegheny, Clarion, Venango and Warren counties. Although families from all the counties are represented, special care was taken to collect sketches from editors’ counties.

The Fairfax Genealogical and Mount Vernon Genealogical Societies’ Joint Conference and Genealogy Expo “Guess Who’s Coming to Virginia for Genealogy! Speakers, Vendors and You!” takes place on Saturday, 24 March 2007; celebrate 400 years of Virginia genealogy in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC. Speakers: Jana Broglin CG, Linda Jonas, Charles Mason, Jr., CG, George Morgan, and Laura G. Prescott will present twenty lectures on Colonial Research, the National Archives, Lives and Times, Mapping the Land, and the Civil War. New for the Macintosh: iFamily for Tiger, a $29.95 download that won't run on pre-Tiger systems. This genealogy program focuses on individuals and is very proficient at representing non-traditional relationships. It even sports an image transcription tool that helps you record information from pictures of documents and tombstones. A free trial is available.
